If it's not the media sounding the alarm, it's family members.

People are nervous--and for good reason.

This is a time where all of us need to protect our energy. And we need a new kind of intensity to do so.

We need an approach that is all about intense self-compassion for energy management.

Defining Energy

What is energy? Is it being able to move around physically? Is it mental fortitude?

What is energy exactly?

For me, it's a sense of place. It's a movement through the world, but it's also a movement of being. It's a knowing where you are, mentally and physically, at any point in time. When you have stable energy, you are self-assured and capable. When you don't the world feels like it's crashing down.

Without enough energy, you can't move forward like you need to. It's like moving through sludge on an already sandy beach. It's a doubling down of difficult emotions. It's being mired in quicksand while the world continues to spin around you.

So what can you do about it?

An Approach to Energy Management

There are a number of things you can do. One solution will not work at all times, so it's best to experiment. And, if needed, you'll have to fight to regroup. That seems counterintuitive and extreme, but it makes sense during dire times.

At your job, within your family, among your closest friends--all these contexts require a mindset that you will do whatever you need to do to get it done, whatever done means at the time. This kind of extreme mindset is needed right now to manage your energy levels. It's taking on an air of seriousness that doesn't normally exist.

We're going through a difficult time, and that calls for difficult measures of endurance and energy management. Mindset is crucial right now. So you need to decide if that's where you want to be. Do you want to do whatever it takes to manage your energy levels? That's the first step.

Next, you need to run through your list of normal energy drains and energy boosters. List them side by side. One side tanks your energy levels. The other lifts you up. Once you have them all listed out, focus on the tried and true, the energy boosters that have lifted you up most reliably in the past. Match them against the energy drains on the other side. You might start to see patterns. There are going to be some logical counteracting punches that you can use against the most famous energy drains in your life.

This kind of intense self-compassion approach to finding balancing might seem odd, but strange times call for these types of measures.

You don't have to totally revamp your life. You just need to use simple skills--like this list-building approach--in bolder and more resilient ways. If you approached your energy management halfheartedly in the past, it might be time to amp it up a bit.

No one can balance your energy for you. You're going to have to do it. Take it seriously, like you would a job. This is your life we're talking about.

Treat it with the respect and ruthless compassion that it deserves.
